The Supply Chain Challenge
Most sporting goods brands operate with lean teams and rely on manufacturing partners. Effective supplier management is what separates brands that scale from brands that plateau.
Core Principles
1. Single Source of Truth
Establish a master product specification document that every supplier and internal team member works from. Version control is critical — you would be surprised how often “last year spec” causes problems.
2. Sample First, Produce Second
Always require pre-production samples before mass manufacturing. Document every detail that needs changing, then get an approved sample (the “golden sample”) that serves as the reference for production.
3. Production Monitoring
For high-value orders, conduct mid-production QC inspections. This costs far less than fixing defects after a full batch is produced. We offer this as a standard service for OEM clients.
4. Lead Time Management
Always build buffer time into your schedules. We recommend:
- Production lead time + 3 days internal buffer
- Shipping lead time + 5 days (for customs and port delays)
- Order holiday buffer — Chinese New Year is a minimum 2-week factory shutdown, plan accordingly
Common Supply Chain Pitfalls to Avoid
- Waiting Too Long to Reorder — Peak season lead times double; order 3 months in advance
- Neglecting Customs Docs — Missing certificates = customs delays = lost sales
- Not Planning for QC — Budget 5-10% of order time for inspection
- Single Supplier Dependency — Always have a backup option for critical products
How We Simplify Supply Chain for You
AegonSport acts as a single-source supplier for multiple sporting goods categories. Instead of managing three or four different factories, you manage one point of contact:
- Consolidated production across categories
- Shared packaging and logistics
- One QC system, one set of reports
- Mixed-product container loading (rackets + shuttlecocks + balls in one shipment)
