Panel Count Basics
Panel count is one of the most recognizable features of a basketball. The deep grooves between panels (called channels) provide grip. More panels mean more channels — but the relationship between panel count and performance is not as simple as “more = better”.
8-Panel Basketballs: The Classic
8-panel is the traditional design used by the NBA and most professional leagues worldwide.
Characteristics
- Wider panels, deeper channels
- Excellent grip for larger hands
- Wider contact area with the court surface
- Tradition and brand recognition
12-Panel Basketballs: Specialty Design
12-panel basketballs feature narrower panels and more channels, offering some distinct advantages.
Characteristics
- More grip points — better for smaller hands or sweaty palms
- Channels closer together for more control
- Popular in street basketball and 3×3 competitions
- Can feel more compact than 8-panel equivalents
Material Matters More
While panel count gets more visual attention, material composition is equally important:
| Material | Durability | Grip | Price | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Leather | Medium | Excellent (breaks in) | $$$ | Indoor professional play |
| PU Leather | High | Very Good | $$ | Indoor/outdoor training |
| Composite | Very High | Good | $ | Recreational, outdoor use |
| Rubber | Highest | Fair | $ | Schools, youth programs |
